Short Thoughts: on abstract

Some definitions of the word abstract;

existing in thought or as an idea but not having a physical or concrete existence.

abstract concepts such as love or beauty

relating to or denoting art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but rather seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, colours, and textures.

abstract pictures

I’m not sure as we age whether humans should see things more black and white about the world. I know people my age and older who are very definitive about many things but, I’ve found myself inhabiting a more abstract train of thought for some time now.

Faith for example is abstract. Many of our ideologies and deeply held beliefs are abstract whether we like it or not. They are ideas, thoughts… not concrete… only existing in our minds, expressed in words or pictures by others, or us but not something we can grasp physically in our hands.

Our understanding of who we are as individuals is abstract, often a combination of realities, assumptions, actions, hurts, victories and thoughts.

And that’s ok right?

All of this has led me to really engage with my own abstract artwork. Unprescribed, sporadic perhaps and while it does not attempt to represent external reality, but as the definition above describes, I see more clearly now as I create how it aims to achieve its effect using shapes, colours, and textures.

And that’s more than ok. It’s worth exploring.

Because for me, life is more abstract than we dare admit.
